The Marquis Family
We decided to use Sunday evening as our primary time for family worship. This is the only evening that everyone is definitely at home. We got off to a late start, however (about 8:30 PM).
We started off by singing Down At the Cross. Me on my unplugged Fender Strat and Logan standing to my left reading the words and “singing lead vocals.” I then explained the doctrine taught in the old hymn explaining what “where the blood was applied” meant. Law/Gospel…Way of the Master.
We then went over the first 3 catechism questions and camped out on the 3rd question (“Why did God make you and all things? Answer: For His glory). We talked about giving God glory and what that meant. We read from Jeremiah Chp 9…(that a rich man should not boast in his riches or a strong man in his might. That to God alone should go the glory). We also talked about how we can’t add anything to God. He is absolutely perfect and that by glorifying God, we are blessed.
We then went over memory verses (Gen 1:1 and Eph 6:1).
The younger Marquis’ were restless. There was fighting between Logan and Rusty about which would sit next to me. Cade (who stayed up way too late the night before) seem to have 50 lbs eyelids. Rusty could not sit still. After we ended in prayer (where I specifically prayed that these boys would be convicted of their sins and grab hold of the cross of Christ), I felt that I had failed. The organization wasn’t great. The fighting between the 2 youngest was frustrating.
I woke up the next morning with the same feelings of frustration. Then I went to the word. Read from Titus 2 (using my daily devotional). Read 3 chapters from Isaiah and a chapter from Philippians. Then went to the Lord in prayer.
The prayer continued on my drive to work. Then it hit me. Despite the logistical and organizational failures of Sunday night’s family devotion….my children heard me teach them on the law and gospel, on the glory of God, on God as creator, on how Children are to obey their children in the Lord (Eph 6:1) and they heard me pray for their very souls.
My thoughts of a failed worship time and self-doubt faded away.
To God alone the Glory.
